When did you start exfoliating?
I started dabbling with scrubs when I was around 15. Every Sunday evening, I’d massage the grainy mixture all over my face, before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.
The ritual made my skin softer than a baby’s. But I didn’t dare do it too often. You often hear that starting using exfoliants (or retinol/vitamin C/whatever) too soon can damage skin in the long run.
I had no idea if that were true, but I played it safe – just in case.
Now that I’m older and wiser and know a thing or two about skincare, I think I did start a bit too early – but not for the reason you think (and nope, starting early didn’t damage my skin at all. Phew!).
So, at what age should you start exfoliating? Let’s find out:
Why Do You Need To Exfoliate?
Did you know your skin already exfoliates on its own?
Every month, it sheds its old dead cells and replaces them with a brand new layer of younger cells. This is why your skin is always so soft and bright when you’re young (ok, one of the reasons…).
But, as you get older, your skin starts to slacken on the job. Its natural exfoliating process takes longer and longer, so dead cells start accumulating on its surface.
All of a sudden, your skin is rougher to the touch. Your complexion has lost its glow. And pimples start popping up everywhere. It’s not a pretty picture.
That’s your cue to start adding an exfoliant to your skincare routine to give your skin a helping hand at removing those pesky dead cells.
Here’s what happens when you exfoliate:
- Clear skin: If dead cells are off your skin, they can’t fall into your pores and clog them up. No clogged pores = no acne.
- Smoother texture: Dead cells accentuate wrinkles. When you remove them, your fine lines and wrinkles look smaller to the naked eye.
- Even-tone complexion: The older dead cells are the most damaged by the sun. That means they’re usually the darkest in colour. By replacing them with younger, lighter-coloured cells, you can fade away dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
- Radiant glow: Smoother skin better reflects light. Hello, dewy glow!
- Enhanced penetration: Too many layers of dead cells can make it harder for skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin.
I bet you want to exfoliate now. But… should you?

At What Age Is It Safe To Start Exfoliating?
This is one of those annoying skincare questions that doesn’t have a clear cut answer. It’s different for everyone.
Your skin exfoliates on its own remember? Giving it a helping hand when it starts to slacken on the job can do wonders for your skin.
But doubling down on exfoliation when your skin is still doing the job well on its own? That can do more harm than good…
I recommend you start exfoliating only when you notice your skin isn’t doing the job well anymore. That means:
- When your skin has lost its glow and no hyaluronic acid serum in the world helps.
- When you’re dealing with acne – hello puberty!
- When dark spots are making an unwelcome appearance on your face.
Lots of girls (and boys) get acne as soon as they hit puberty. Get yourself a salicylic acid exfoliant (more on it below) and spare yourself this circle of puberty hell.
If you’re one of those lucky souls who’s not experiencing acne as a teen, congratulations! You can hold off exfoliating until you get dark spots or your skin is duller/rougher than usual.
Doesn’t matter how much everyone is raving about exfoliation. There’s no point in wasting money on something you don’t need.

How Do You Exfoliate?
When I first started exfoliating, I’d use scrubs. Big mistake! They contain small particles with rough edges, like apricot kernels and walnut shells, that can scratch and irritate skin.
These days, I prefer chemical exfoliation. I know the word chemical has become synonym with harmful, but that’s nonsense. When it comes to exfoliation, nothing works better than exfoliating acids.
The best part? There’s a chemical exfoliant for every skin type. Here’s how to find the right one for you:
Oily And Acne-Prone Skin: Salicylic Acid
If you experience any type of acne (blackheads, whiteheads, pimples), you need Salicylic acid (a.k.a. BHA).
Salicylic acid is is the only exfoliant that gets inside your pores, removing all the crap that’s clogging them up and gives you acne. Use it regularly and it’ll clear up your face (plus, prevent those nasty buggers from coming back).
While it’s at it, Salicylic acid also exfoliates the surface of your skin, reduces redness and inflammation, and helps regulate oil production.
You’d be crazy to use anything else!

Dry Skin: Glycolic Acid
Glycolic Acid is the smallest member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) family.
Size matters here. Glycolic acid is so tiny, it can penetrate the skin better than all its relatives. That means it works better, too!
What does it do? It exfoliates the surface of your skin, hydrates it, and fades away dark spots.

Sensitive Skin: Lactic Acid
Like Glycolic acid, Lactic acid is a fellow member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) family. It exfoliates skin and hydrates it to boot.
The difference? Lactic acid is a bigger molecule. That makes it a little less effective – but also less irritating. If you find Glycolic acid too drying and irritating, this is the perfect option for you.

The Bottom Line
Start exfoliating skin when you need it. For most people, that’s when they get acne during puberty. But if you don’t experience that, hold off until you see signs of roughness, dullness, or uneven skin tone.
At what age did you start exfoliating? Share your stories in the commemnts below.
I think I started exfoliating when I was in 8th grade. It was one of those apricot scrub thing which went into my ears and scratched my skin. I didn’t exfoliate again until about two years ago. Now, I do it 2-3 times/week.
Dao, apricot scrubs can be quite rough, I’m sorry it scratched your skin. No wonder it put you off exfoliating for a while! But it just makes a big difference when one exfoliates regularly, doesn’t it?
Hey i want to know about the chemical exfoliating deeply, means which products? Please explain ! Thank you♥️
Riya, you mean which exfoliant can get into the pores? you need salicylic acid for that.
I came to exfoliating kind of late. Mostly because I just didn’t treat my skin well when i was a teen. I basically left it alone.
Nowadays though, I exfoliate often and I like it.
Trisha, I didn’t treat my skin well as a teen either. It’s a shame no one taught teens how to take proper care of their skin, but at least we know better now. 🙂
I love the Origins exfoliator I’ve been using. It’s gentle and makes my skin baby soft! I hated the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. It really ruined my skin. I can’t believe I used it religiously during my teens! Such a huge mistake.
Dee, that’s too bad the St Ives scrub ruined my skin. I know apricot can be rough but that has so many positive reviews I thought it’s be gentler. Oh, well. I’m glad you found something that works well for you now.
I have been using the st Ives apricot scrub for a year 1-2 times a week and my skin is so smooth and soft
Monique, I’m not a fan of that scrub. You have to be really gentle with it or it’ll cause more problems than it’s worth it.
I think I started using exfoliators during the first year of university, so at the age of 18-19!
Stavroula, that’s good. I started just after that, but I wish I had begun earlier. Still, 18 is not a bad age to start. 🙂
I just started exfoliating near the end of my high school. I too wish I had started earlier. In fact, I wished I had started ALOT of things earlier lol Like using a proper cleanser that’s meant for my face!
Isabel, me too! I wish I had known how to take care for my skin when I was younger. I would have probably avoided lots of damage and breakouts then. *sighs* But at least we are more savvy now. 😉
I am a 14 year old girl and i exfoliate a lot. I use the st Ives apricot scrub every day and i love it! I have recently stopped my exfoliation (as an experiment) and my skin is looking awesome! I use a foaming soap with tea tree in it and at the end of the day i use a mask with peppermint in it. I hardly have any breakouts anymore! Eventually i will slowly add in my exfoliation again. Just a question should i wash my face in the morning?
Anonymous, I’m glad your exfoliating regime is working so well for you. And yes, you should wash your face every morning to remove all traces of dirt that may have accumulated on it. 🙂
I just started exfoliating this month and im 14 :3
Chelsea, well done. It’s good to start early. I wish I had done so too. 🙂
I’m 13 and i have been worrying about my skin lately because I have a lot of pimples and I heard about exfoliating but I wasn’t sure if it was suitable for my age or not thank you for creating this.
Fei, my pleasure. Try an exfoliant with salicylic acid. It should help get rid of the pimples. 🙂
Hi, I’m 13 and I am eczema prone, very dry, sensitive and i have acne. If I use salicylic acid it would get rid of my acne but it will dry out my skin even more, if i use glycolic acid it will sooze my dry skin but it wouldn’t get rid of my pimples, what should i do?
Meili, hi, sorry to hear about your problem. Have you tried using them on alternate days? Another solution would be to use salicylic acid 3 or 4 times a week and a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid every day. That should prevent your skin from drying out. Hope this helps.
Hi can clinique exfoliating toner be used every day? Is a toner or exfoliating?
Joshua, do you mean the exfoliating tonic? That’s an exfoliant and could be used daily, but I don’t recommend it. It contains a lot of alcohol which can be drying for the skin.
Hi,
Can I exfoliate everyday with apricot scrub? Will it cause any harm because I have read in many places that it harms your skin. I’m 15 and have oily skin. I also have acne.
Thanks.
Mare, I wouldn’t use apricot scrub at all. It can be very irritating. Instead, try an exfoliant with salicylic acid (also called BHA). That exfoliates skin and helps clear breakouts and acne.
I bought a spa kit that came with an exfoliating brush. I got the kit when I was 10 years old (I bought it for christmas). I started exfoliating regularly when I was 11 years old. I started very early as I was very self conscious.
Jill, that’s very early. But, I bet your skin looks amazing. 🙂
Hey! I read your article and I was wondering if you could (or anybody really) recommend a exfoliation treatment for me? I want to take care of my skin even though I’m 13. I hope somebody can help. Thank you for your time.
Nyein, that’s great that you want to start taking good care of your skin at such a young age. Is your skin oily or dry? If oily, look for an exfoliant with salicylic acid (also called BHA). If dry, opt for glycolic acid. Paula’s Choice makes some great ones.
hello i have a normal skin 🙂 do i really need to exfoliate my face?
hope you notice me 🙂
Jimmy, of course I’ve noticed you. I reply to everyone, even if it can take a few days these days because work is so crazy!
I so envy you for having normal skin! Lucky you. I would just exfoliate once or twice a week with either a washcloth (really gentle) or glycolic acid. Frankly, I’d use glycolic acid because it can boost the production of collagen – in your case exfoliation would just be an added benefit. Hope it helps.
Hello I am 15 years old so can I use face masks and scrubs?
Fathima, I wouldn’t use scrubs, they’re too irritating. But face masks are fine.
Hello, I’m 15 and I have oily skin. I also have blackheads and pimples. Should exfoliating can prevent it?
Princess, yes, exfoliating with salicylic acid will treat the blackheads and prevent them from coming back.
Hi,can men also exfoliate this early? I am 17 years old and I’m thinking about starting to take care of my skin including a scrub. But I’m gonna use it only once or maybe twice a week though.
Mario, yes men can start exfoliating this early too. But I wouldn’t use a scrub. A chemical exfoliant that suits your skin type would be a better option.
I’m just way too afraid that exfoliating in a young age such 15 or 16 may have some side effects when i get old. Does exfoliating at the age of 16 will leave some side effects when i get the age of mid 25 to 30?
Khate, it won’t have any side effects but why do something unless you need it? I recommend exfoliation to teenagers only if they have oily skin.
Hello. I’m 24 years old. I haven’t done facial scrub yet as I was unaware of such stuffs. I want to ask if its too late to start..My face has been through acne problems. Will face scrub on weekly basis help me to repair pores left by acne?
Anand, exfoliation will help but not facial scrubs. Try a salicylic acid exfoliant every morning and see if that makes a difference.
hi i am twelve years old and i do my makeup a lot so i have been noticing changes in my skin i have oily skin in my t zone recently bought the glam glow exfoliant but my mom says it will ruin my skin, will it cause damage?
Victoria, use less makeup!! I’m not saying give it up. If you like it, wear it. But if some of the products you’re using are making your skin worse, then change products or use less. I know that contouring/baking and all that stuff is popular but at your age, you don’t need it. Use only make that makes you feel good AND doesn’t make your skin worse. You may have to experiment to find the right produts/makeup style, but that’s the fun in beauty, right?
I don’t recommend Glamglow. If you have pimples, The ordinary salicylic acid is a better and gentler choice.
Hi! I’m 13 and I used to have slightly oily skin so I made my own scrubs with coffee, sugar, etc, and started exfoliating regularly and now my face is pretty much normal now except for very little dryness now and then but that’s probably because of the summer heat. Should I continue exfoliating with the homemade scrubs though my skin is almost normal? How frequently? I also have a few pimples. Would sugar scrubs be too harsh for my skin if used everyday? Thanks in advance <3
Trisha, it’s possible than the scrub is contributing to your dryness. Removing dead cells manually is harsh and can hurt skin. Switch to a salicylic acid exfoliant. Unlike scrubs, it can get rid of pimples too.
Hey im 15 can I use Himalaya scrub pack and toner?
Deepika, I don’t recommend them at any age. Scrubs can irritate skin and toners are useless: https://www.beautifulwithbrains.com/is-toner-really-necessary/
I am 15 but im sooo worried about starting my first scrub which is st.ives pink lemon and mendarin orange I don’t know whether I should use it regularly and whether it will be good or bad for my skin can u help me plzzz
Rachel, don’t use scrubs, they’re irritating! Plus, at your age, you don’t need exfoliation – unless you have acne.
Hi!
First I want to thank-you for such a lovely and informative article. Secondly, which exfoliate do you recommend for open pores skin.😊😊
Masuma, it depends on your skin type. If it’s oily, salicylic.
I normally get whiteheads around the T zone area, what type of exfoliant do you think I should use?
Emma, salicylic acid.
Hi,
I once had a fair and glowing skin when I was 10 years old, but now I’m 15 years old and my skin seems to be dull all over my body than before, and my face is very oily and full of acne marks and scars, and I had never exfoliate,
So please can u help me
Borkiry, start exfoliating with salicylic acid 2 or 3 times a week.
Can you give me the name of any product
